Q. How would I know if I have listeria?

Hi doctor,

I am 34 weeks pregnant. What are the symptoms of listeria? I read somewhere that a pregnant women may not have symptoms at all. How would I know if I have it? Also there is opened unpasteurized cheese in the fridge. Can that cheese contaminate an opened package of cheese, just by being beside it? I am worried about listeria and would appreciate your advice on this topic. Thank you.

Welcome to dr.sitehome.info.

  • Pregnant women typically experience fever and other non-specific symptoms of listeria such as fatigue and aches.
  • Besides symptoms, a blood culture is the most ideal way of diagnosis of listeria.
  • However, infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn.
  • Listeria can grow and multiply in some foods in the refrigerator. Unpasteurized (raw) milk and cheeses as well as other foods made from unpasteurized milk often tend to become sources for listeria infection.
  • It can also contaminate other foods provided the listeria from one has been transferred mechanically during usage and touching other foods.
