Q. My son got fits without fever. Why?

Hi doctor,

My son is 7 years old. He had fits twice in the past 10 days. He got fits while sleeping, but without any fever. At the age of 2, he had high fever and fits. When I consulted his doctor, he said that the fits was due to high fever and I should take extra care in case of fever. We had an MRI and angiography and the reports showed normal remarks. I could not understand the reason for his fits. Please help me. If you want to see the report, please let me know. I am very depressed.

Welcome to dr.sitehome.info.

  • Your son had suffered from febrile seizures at the age of 2. Febrile seizures are seen in children at the time of febrile illness. They are usually benign and do not lead to neurological damage and long term sequelae.
  • A small proportion of children who experience febrile seizures go on to develop a seizure disorder later in life.
  • Kids with a family history of febrile seizures are more likely to have one and about 1 in every 3 kids, who have had one seizure will have another.
  • Kids who are younger (under 15 months) when they have their first febrile seizure are also at higher risk of a future febrile seizure. Most children outgrow having febrile seizures by the time they are 5 years old.
  • MRI in all these kids is usually normal. I suggest you continue with seizure medications in appropriate doses. We can start tapering them gradually after six months to a year of seizure-free period.
