Q. Will Nexium help to improve belching?

Hi doctor,

I have been having shortness of breath, excessive yawning and belching. After about a week the shortness of breath went away. Last night, I drank bicarbonate of soda with lime and water and woke up back with the gasping for air and feeling of shortness of breath. Could the baking soda have caused this? Is this serious or will the shortness of breath go away? I do not have any other symptom of acid reflux. How long does it take for Nexus to work? I feel like I am going crazy. Will I ever return to my normal state before I started taking weight loss pills? This is how everything started in the first place. Please answer both the questions in detail. Thank you very much.

Welcome to dr.sitehome.info.

I had gone through all the details posted.

  • Belching and bloating sensation can be the side effect of the drug. Kindly avoid spicy foods, cold drinks, tea, coffee and eat timely.
  • I suggest Pantocid-L (Pantoprazole with Levosulpiride) combination tablet daily morning on an empty stomach and Nexium (Esomeprazole) at night before food. This combination tablet will help to decrease gastritis and also your belching as Levosulpiride acts as for GI motility.
  • Regarding shortness of breath, gastritis can cause chest pain mimicking cardiac one. But, causing shortness of breath is unlikely.
  • Kindly consult a general physician for complete clinical examination to rule out the causes of shortness of breath.
  • Do you get shortness of breath on climbing stairs? What time of night you got SOB and how did it get relieved? Do you have swelling of lower limbs?
  • Get minimum investigations to rule out the common causes of shortness of breath before attributing to being caused.
